Number of Players: Typically 4 players, 2 teams of 2 going against each other.

You’ll Need: Beer, 20 plastic cups (10 for each team), 2 water cups, 2 ping pong balls, and a long table.

Gameplay: The cups are set up in triangles on opposite ends of the table. Pour a small amount of beer into each cup and try to throw the balls into the other team’s cups. Each player gets a turn when your team is up. If your opponent sinks a ball, the cup of beer must be drunk and the cup set aside. The team that eliminates all of their opponents’ cups first is the winner! The water cups are for rinsing the ball when it goes rogue because somebody is too drunk to throw right. Originally played with a net and paddles by Dartmouth fraternities in the 50s and 60s, this game has changed but is still very popular. Check out Pong University for some fun nuances and throwing strategies.

Flip Cup

Number of Players: As many as will fit on either side of the table.

You’ll Need: Beer, as many plastic cups as you need for every person to have one, and a long table.

Gameplay: This is a relay race drinking game, whichever team finishes first wins. It’s super important that you have an equal number of players on each team. Line up an equal number of plastic cups on either side of the table. Then pour a small amount of beer into each cup. Have someone yell “Go” to kick off the race. Step one – drink the beer in your cup. Step two – set the cup back down on the table right side up. Optional step three – perform a dance move or other small/humorous task that’s assigned at the beginning. Step four – place the cup at the edge of the table so it’s slightly hanging over the side. Step five – using your finger, tap the bottom of the cup that’s hanging over the edge to flip it over. The goal is to get it to stand upside-down. As soon as the player ahead of you successfully flips their cup, you may start the process. The first team to flip all their cups upside-down wins. Quarters

Number of Players: Unlimited

You’ll Need: 2 quarters, 2 shot glasses, a plastic cup, beer, and a hard surface.

Gameplay: The goal of this game is to bounce a quarter off a hard surface and into a shot glass.  Everyone sits in a circle with the plastic cup of beer in the middle. 2 people on opposite sides of the circle each start off with a quarter and a shot glass. As soon as they successfully bounce the quarter into the glass they pass it to their left. Anyone who gets lapped by the other shot glass must drink the beer in the middle and refill it. So if you take too long you could end up drinking a lot of center beers! Howcast has a video that demonstrates the perfect technique.

Kings (AKA Circle of Death)

Number of Players: You can play with as few as 2, but this game is the most fun with 6-10 players.

You’ll Need: A deck of cards and beer. Depending on the variation you play, either put an unopened can of beer or an open cup/glass of beer in the middle. If this is a new game for your group it helps to have a cheat sheet that lists all the rules.

Gameplay: Sit in a circle, place the beer in the center and fan out the playing cards into an unbroken circle around it. Each player takes a turn picking a card and doing the corresponding rule. Then the card is placed in the center according to the variation you chose. If you’re playing with a glass, that’s the King’s Cup (aka Waterfall) version. In that case, whenever a King is drawn, you make a rule and pour some of your drink in the center cup. The last person to draw a king (the 4th king) must drink the center cup. Additionally, whoever breaks the circle of playing cards first must chug the rest of their drink. If you’re playing with a beer can, that’s the Circle of Death (aka Ring of Fire) version. In this case, the corner of each card is slid under the beer tab. The gameplay continues until someone’s card pops the tab. Whoever pops it “loses” and must chug the entire center beer.

Never Have I Ever

Number of Players: Unlimited

You’ll Need: Alcohol, the ability to list things you haven’t done, and the bravery to admit what you HAVE done

Gameplay: Everyone takes turns saying something they haven’t done. “Never ever have I ever…danced naked in the rain” And whoever HAS done that, drinks…excuse me while I take a drink over here. Mix in a variety of activities from mundane to interesting, from innocent to downright dirty. It’s a fun way to get to know each other and swap life stories. A great conversation starter and drinking game hybrid. So fun to see what slips out…

Edward Fortyhands

Top 9 Drinking Games

Number of Players: Technically a game for one. Although everyone can participate separately. Except for the last person cuz there’s no one else left with free hands to tape them up.

You’ll Need: 2 forty ounces, duct tape, no shame, and someone to help you pee all night.

Gameplay: This drinking game consists of duct-taping a forty-ounce beer to each hand. And keep it like that until you’ve finished them both. The name of the game is how well you can function with 2 open beers for hands. Can you show someone that funny cat video, change the music when your secret embarrassing playlist comes on? Can you refrain from spilling out of 2 open container hands? No, not really. Basically, all you can do is chug and try to get people to do stuff for you. Very entertaining, very messy, very hilarious.

Power Hour

Beer o'clock

Number of Players: Unlimited

You’ll Need: 1 hour and lots of beer

Gameplay: The goal of this game is to consume a specified number and type of drinks in 1 hour. The most common variant is taking a shot of beer every minute for the whole hour. Whoever makes it the whole hour without quitting or missing a shot wins. One way to mark the minutes is to make a playlist ahead of time. Include 60 one-minute song clips so that every time a new song comes on, everyone takes their shot. You can also set a clock or alarm to signal shot time. It’s fun to do a huge countdown and take a group first shot. Then counting down the last minute for the last ones standing. This is a good time for those shot glasses on a lanyard so you can quickly refill. The more you drink the more likely you are to lose track of anything not attached to you.

Presidents and Ass Holes

Number of Players: 3-10 is optimal

You’ll Need: The Presidents and Ass Holes game, alcohol of choice

Gameplay: This is a variation of the classic game “Asshole” that’s played with a normal deck of playing cards. They enhanced and expanded it to create a specific drinking game, to, you know, make money selling a game to drunks. If you love drinking and a good game night, definitely add this to your repertoire. It’s basically Uno with alcohol, the goal is to be the first to get rid of all the cards in your hand. The first one with an empty hand is the President. The last to have cards in their hand is the Asshole. There’s 1 winner, 1 loser, and everyone else.

Fingers

Number of Players: As many fingers as you can fit on the center receptacle.

You’ll Need: A cup, bowl, or other receptacle filled with alcohol and drinks for everyone.

Gameplay: This is a strategy-based game with fast rounds. Fill a cup or bowl with alcohol and place it in the center of the circle. Typically you just fill it with some type of alcohol. But for you savages out there, you can fill it with literally anything edible or drinkable. Cross those fingers you’re not the one who must down the Cheeto/tequila/hot sauce/milk concoction. To start, each player puts a finger on the rim of the cup or bowl. Everyone takes turns guessing how many fingers will be left on the bowl after their countdown. Players strategically leave their fingers or take them away based on the number of players and what the “countdown” person guesses. If you guess correctly, you can leave the game. The last one in the game loses and must consume the contents of the cup/bowl.
