Ultra Music Festival Miami: Then vs. Now

When Ultra Music Festival first started in Miami in 1999, it was only a one-day event. The producers, Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes, chose the name of the festival in honor of Ultra, Depeche Mode’s 1997 album. The festival was held at Collins Park in Miami Beach and attracted an estimated attendance of 10,000. Performances at this first event included Rabbit in the Moon and DJ Baby Anne.

Today, Ultra Music Festival looks very different, but still books amazing artists and continues to draw crowds. The festival moved to Bayfront Park in 2001 as attendance increased. Then, the festival expanded to two days in 2007, and then to three days in 2011. While organizers tried holding the festival over two weekends, they have since settled back on having the festival occur over just one weekend.

The festival has also expanded to include performers from a wider variety of EDM styles and even a few performers from outside the genre. At the same time, the introduction of the Resistance stage has also allowed the festival to bring in lesser-known “underground” musicians from the electronic music world.

In 2019, the last time the festival occurred, 170,000 people attended the event over three days. There’s a cap on the number of tickets available due to the location in Bayfront Park, and 2022 is looking like it’s going to be a good year for Ultra Music Festival.
